Winter tourists at the lighthouse

A happy quintet from Niedersachsen is this year’s first visitors. Klaus Peter is a lighthouse buff that has seen lighthouses on all seven continents, whereas Heinz visited Nordkyn 40 years ago (carrying a film camera; his highly interesting footage may be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Fwhg1IPQb0)

Together with the two gentlemen are their wives Heike and Gabriele and Heinz’ and Heike’s son Felix. Happily enough, the weather gods have made no trouble, and they report of a comfortable, calm and interesting stay at the northernmost lighthouse of the European continent.

As a main venue for art during summer’s “Kulturdugnad Gamvik”, it is only natural for us to cooperate with artists at other times of the year. As November darkens by the day,  Hedvig Biong and Marius Moldvær reside at the lighthouse, working on their project “The ocean unseen.” Responding to the impact of their surroundings in both poetry, drawings and installations, they will open a new exhibition the coming weekend. Part 1 will open at the shop / café in Gamvik Saturday at 11, while part 2 will be open at the lighthouse Sunday at noon. Welcome!

Greetings to one of the first Norwegian painters inspired by the high north

Beginning of the autumn season?

Lighthouses are often constituted by large and specialized buidlings, and they do require a lot of maintenance. In the earlier days, they were manned and well kept throughout the year, but today, they are all automatized. Many of them have entered a new stage in life, usually connected with tourism.
This is why the Coastal Administration, owner of these "Cathedrals of the coast" called for a meeting with their "lodgers" from the counties of Troms and Finnmark at Slettnes last weekend. Who should do what in order to keep these gems of our coastal cultural heritage in the shape they deserve?
Enjoying good discussions and the highest temperatures so far this year, several issues were touched upon in a way that will surely make things easier for all, including the venerable buildings. Thanks to all participants!

End of the summer season

Being unable to publish frequently during high season is not ideal, and our only excuse is that we have simply been too busy taking care of the many visitors that have been enjoying waffles, views, stories, suppers and sleeping at Slettnes this summer. Not to mention the rather impressing crowds (given a population density which approximates 0 in these parts) that gathered for the cultural festival "Kulturdugnad Gamvik"(Check it out on facebook!), where Slettnes lighthouse is the main venue. 

The café, guiding and accomodation services will be open until Wednesday this week. From then on, only groups may book, preferably well in advance.

Summer Saturday Supper at Slettnes

For the rest of the summer season, we will serve a 3 course supper every second Saturday, beginning on June 30th. For guests, there is an especially favourable accomodation offer.

Our creative staff twists the classics just enough to assure that a visit to the café at Slettnes gives you the feeling of being back in the eternal peace of grandma's kitchen, while at the same time your nostrils and eyes are tempted by combinations yet untasted. This one was an immediate hit: Nettlewaffel with smoked salmon, sour cream and Siberian chives. Marketed as this weeks special, today's respone indicates that this little delicacy will reappear time and time again. Mmm... 

Opening of the summer season June 9th.

Not only will the waffles and other renowned Slettnes delights be available from June 9th noon.
